VTU Summer Semesters : Debugging your confusions (by Prof Kishor)

Dear Students,

There has been considerable confusion regarding the newly introduced Summer Semester under VTU. After reviewing the latest VTU notifications and circulars, here is a simplified explanation for all students.

1. What is the Summer Semester?

The Summer Semester is an additional academic term conducted after the Even Semester to help students clear specific academic requirements without waiting for an entire year.

It is not a regular semester and is intended to support students who have:

Attendance shortages (DX)

Insufficient CIE/Internal Marks (NP)

Failed subjects (F Grade)

Absent subjects (AB Grade)

2. For 2022 Scheme Students (Admitted in 2024-25 Batch)

After 1st & 2nd Semester:

Students may register for the Summer Semester if they:

• Have attendance shortage
• Have not met CIE requirements
• Have failed (F Grade)
• Were absent (AB Grade)

Students can register for up to 14 credits (18 credits for Architecture).

After completing attendance and CIE requirements during the Summer Semester, they will be eligible to appear for the Summer Semester End Examination (SEE).

3. For 2025 Scheme Students (Admitted in 2025-26 Batch)

The same provisions apply after completion of the 1st and 2nd Semesters.

Students with:

DX Grade

NP Grade

F Grade

AB Grade can utilize the Summer Semester to clear their courses.

4. Do Failed Students Have to Wait One Full Year?

No.

This is one of the biggest advantages of the Summer Semester.

Students with F or AB grades can directly register and appear for the Summer Semester Examination instead of waiting for the next academic cycle.

5. Can Students Improve Their Marks?

Yes.

Students who have already completed attendance and CIE requirements but wish to improve their understanding or performance may re-register for the course during the Summer Semester.

6. How Long is the Summer Semester?

VTU has specified:

Approximately 8 weeks of classes

Followed by 2 weeks of examinations

7. How Many Credits Can Be Registered?

UG Students: Up to 14 Credits

Architecture Students: Up to 18 Credits

8. Summer Semester Commencement Dates

As per VTU Notification:

Semester Scheme Commencement Date

IV Semester 2022 Scheme 24 July 2026
II Semester 2025 Scheme 27 July 2026

Detailed academic calendar and examination timetable will be announced separately by VTU.

Important Clarification

The Summer Semester is not a replacement for regular semesters.

Regular Odd and Even Semester examinations will continue as usual.

The Summer Semester is an additional opportunity provided by VTU to help students:

Clear backlogs faster, Satisfy attendance/CIE requirements, Avoid losing an academic year, Progress through their degree with minimal delay
